When it comes to beauty, some people approach it with excitement and a flurry of activity, while others take a calm, methodical approach. When it comes to plastic surgery, boring is actually better.

Dr. Bass explains his concept of “boring beauty”—why slow, thoughtful decision-making leads to the best results. Rushing into procedures may feel exciting, but taking your time ensures you make the right choices.

Of course, achieving your beauty goals should be fun and fulfilling, but on the execution side, a steady, careful approach by your plastic surgeon is key to success.

Summer Hardy (00:01):
Welcome to Park Avenue Plastic Surgery Class, the podcast where we explore controversies and breaking issues in plastic surgery. I'm your cohost, Summer Hardy, a clinical assistant at Bass Plastic Surgery in New York City. I'm excited to be here with Dr. Lawrence Bass, Park Avenue plastic surgeon, educator and technology innovator. The title of today's episode is Boring Beauty. This is another episode in our beauty series, the series where we present and discuss Dr. Bass's advice and philosophy about your beauty and how to put together your beauty program. Okay, Dr. Bass, you've piqued my curiosity again, what is this episode about? What is boring beauty?

Dr. Lawrence Bass (00:41):
Well, when we think about working on our beauty, we can have a lot of mania. We can have a lot of excitement. We can have a flurry of intense activity or we can be very calm, very organized and methodical in planning and executing the beauty plan. And so this episode is about taking that approach and working in that fashion to achieve our beauty goals.

Summer Hardy (01:16):
Okay, so why is boring better?

Dr. Lawrence Bass (01:20):
So boring beauty means you're deliberating, you're thinking carefully. You're not rushing, you are taking your time to make sure you're making the right decision. History, changing your face or your body appearance. I mean, people see your face all day, every day. So making sure you're certain that a certain treatment procedure or change is the right decision is a pretty good idea because if you do something you decide two weeks later was a bad idea, that's going to show all day every day until you can correct it if it's correctable.

Summer Hardy (02:07):
Okay. And what does boring allow?

Dr. Lawrence Bass (02:10):
So what boring allows is a focus on process. We're not rushing. It's more logic, less emotion. So maybe the Mr. Spock of beauty,

Summer Hardy (02:23):
Okay, I get the idea, but isn't it supposed to be fun planning and getting plastic surgery?

Dr. Lawrence Bass (02:29):
Absolutely. It's very fun and it's very emotionally satisfying to achieve your beauty goals. And the process should be fun as well. So there's nothing wrong with fun. The emotion is okay on the experience side and also on the perception of beauty side, but it's not as useful in decision making and definitely not on the execution side by the plastic surgeon. That's where boring and methodical severely works to your advantage over being very flip, very casual for very rushed and hepped up about things. Being calm and boring really helps you succeed at achieving your goals, particularly on the execution side with the surgeon.

Summer Hardy (03:29):
That makes sense. How did you come upon this concept, Dr. Bass?

Dr. Lawrence Bass (03:34):
I put this idea into words many years ago when some of the big reality TV plastic surgery shows were on the networks, the Swan, Extreme Makeover, Plastic Surgery 90210, Miami Slice. These were reality TV shows that showed patients getting plastic surgery. And one of my patients who is a major network producer, asked me at the time, she said, "Dr. Bass, there are so many great plastic surgeons in New York City. You are a great plastic surgeon. Why isn't there a reality plastic surgery show in New York City?" And I said to her, "we're boring, right? If you need surgery on your body, on your face, we're a really good choice because we're boring, we're careful, we're grounded, stable, but we're not very entertaining. And TV shows are about entertainment and boring doesn't work there." And she said, "you know, you're right." So that's when I first thought about this, and I was reminded of this more recently, and that led me to plan this specific episode. So I saw a bank commercial where they talked about boring banking, and they said, boring banking launches rockets. It launches your retirement and your financial security, and it lets you pursue all your hopes and dreams. So getting your beauty with boring beauty does exactly the same thing. Lets you full fulfill your hopes and dreams, get the confidence of looking the way you envision yourself image where you'd like to style yourself. And so boring beauty is extremely powerful.
